1. Mehrangarh Fort

Constructed and completed in 1459 by Rajput ruler Rao Jodha, Mehrangarh Fort lies on a hilltop and is visible from every part of Jodhpur. Mehrangarh Fort was built on “Bhakur Cheeria” which literally means “Mountain Of Birds”.

Mehrangarh Fort derives its name from Mehr-garh, where Mehr means “Sun” and Garh means “Fort”. Rajput ruler Rao Jodha was a believer of Sun god and hence is the name of the fort. The fort enclosed by Fortified walls are about 120 feet high and 70 feet broad. This fort really dignifies the Rajput rulers royalty, prestige and honor.

Legends Associated : According to legends, to build the Jodhpur Fort the king had to displaced sole human occupancy on the hill – a hermit with name Cheeria Nathji. He was hesitant to leave the hill but couldn’t do anything. But before leaving hermit cursed Rao Jodha-“his city will ever face scarcity of water”. Rao Jodha managed to appease the hermit by creating a temple and a house in the fort. In addition to this he buried four people alive at the four corners of the Mehrangarh Fort.
